The gametes of human beings are the sperm and ovum .
The gametes are said to be haploid.(n,where n=23).
During meiosis, the number of chromosomes are reduced haif .
Hence , meiosis is also know as reduction division
Meiosis halves the chromosome number during the formation of gametes , so that the gametes formed are upon fertilisation .
As a result of crossing over during prophase 1 and independent assortment of chromosomes during metaphase 1, the gametes formed are all genetically different . This gives rise to variation among offspring . Variation is important in ensuring the continued existence of a species under changing environmental conditions
