Cell Division

1. Types of cell division 

• Mitosis - Somatic cell is involved in mitosis.
• Meiosis - Reproductive cell or gamete is involved in meiosis.

2. Events occur in cell division

• Nuclear division - Partitioning of nucleus.
• Cytoplasmic division - Cytokinesis 

3. The importance of cell division 

• Mitosis - Increase number of cells for growth and development in living organism.
               - Repairing damaged cell.
               - Replacing dead cells.
               - Asexual reproduction such as binary fission of bacteria and budding yeast.
• Meiosis - Maintains the same chromosomal number (diploid) for the offspring.                                         - Produces genetic variation in offspring.
